With 3000 sites, 40,000 vehicles and over 200,000 employees in the UK, our environmental impacts and activities are widespread. We've already introduced the ISO14001 standard at a number of our sites and are developing an environmental management system for implementation across all of our organisation.

Integrating environmental concerns into our business ways of working is key to ensuring that the environment is not seen as "just an add on". Already, we have taken steps towards this, for instance:

  • As part of our investment appraisal process, environmental statements are required to be completed for any project over a certain value and any project that will have significant environmental impacts.
  • Incorporating environmental scans into our business planning process
  • Recognising environmental pollution as one of the business wide risks and so ensuring it is accounted for in our integrated risk management process
  • Building environmental considerations into our supplier selection process.
  • Working with our product development teams to identify how we can build environmental issues into our new product development process.

We are also engaging in awareness raising activities internally, to ensure that our employees are aware of our commitment to the environment and the processes we have in place to manage our impacts.

More specifically, we impact on the environment in a number of ways, which are listed below, along with some of the initiatives we are undertaking to manage them:
