We all want to be understood. Each of us is unique and we want people to know what its like to be us. Today's mobile phone generation of children find 'texting' second nature, but we believe there's an even better way to give young people a voice.
It's one that allows them to escape the hectic rush of life and gather their thoughts. Whether they need to deliver information, opinions, say thank you or tell a funny story, the letter offers far greater scope to connect in a creative way. And they can do it in their own style and at their own pace.
For the past 28 years Royal Mail has run a national letter writing competition in UK schools. Royal Mail's Young Letter Writers Competition has attracted well over 4 million entries since it began, making it the biggest letter writing competition of its kind in the UK.
