| Written communications provide the basis for modern civilisation. They provide the means to educate our children, to govern countries and to conduct business and international relations. The written word has enabled connections to be made between people and between the ages.
Many of us gain our most rewarding experiences through our mastery of reading and writing. Yet Government figures reveal that over 7 million adults in the UK have basic literacy problems.
For many years we have promoted literacy for children through a range of classroom resources. We also work through our Stepping Stone Fund to help adults overcome problems or take up new challenges. Some have had very basic school education, while others have severe learning difficulties or disabilities which inhibit their learning. More confident adults may join projects which use the written word to explore culture, identity or local history. |
