Richard Handover was appointed to the Board in January 2003 and was, until the end of 2004, Chairman of W H Smith plc.

He is Chairman of the Adult Learning Inspectorate and Business in the Community Education Leadership and is a Non Executive Director of the Nationwide Building Society.
